We had friends for brunch, listened to a lot of records
and everything should've been fine but there was a big hole where the happiness would've fit in

And I spent a lot of time in my car listening to Bruce Springsteen's Tunnel of Love from 1987 on a cassette tape
Driving up and down 494 doing this doing that sometimes getting paid
But mostly i was on my own
Listening to Walk Like a Man
Trying to overlook the production values and get to the heart of things

I mean it wasn't like we had no chance
We were almost there
Sometimes we were pretty good in fact

I had a blank head, a fragile heart
I had no place being anywhere, I felt like a spider stuck in its own web
And even when it was good, it was a blur of good, quicker than mercury
And we'd crash out exhausted after we finally got the kids down to bed
And it's nothing like the old times, it's a different version of happiness than I ever expected, but I love it, I really do
But I miss getting in arguments about which version of Hallelujah was the best
Leonard Cohen's, or Jeff Buckley's, or John Cale's
Oh, I hardly remember how to have an opinion about something like that
Oh, just want to get back to the simpler times, listening to songs, cruising around
